Vancouver Island is home to Mt. Washington, a ski resort just a 3-hour drive north of Victoria. The second largest of its kind in the province behind Whistler, Mt. Washington often receives more snowfall than anywhere else in BC and once held the world record for snowfall (over 21 feet of snowpack in 1995)! With a season that runs from early Autumn to Easter, there's always time to enjoy the 60 runs that are serviced by a high-speed quad chair, a fixed-grip quad, 2 triples, a double, a platter, a rope-tow and a vertical drop of over 500 meters.
Vancouver is home to several fantastic ski hills, all on the North Shore, just a short drive from the city. "The Peak of Vancouver", Grouse Mountain includes 26 runs with the new Olympic Express quad chair transporting over 2000 skiers and snowboarders to its summit per hour. Cypress Bowl is 30 square kilometers that includes 3 quad and 2 double chairlifts, a tube tow, 38 downhill runs and over 19 kilometers of cross-country trails as well as a new alpine sports facility designed for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Boasting the most consistent snowfall of the three, Mount Seymour is best known as the home of the Seymour Kids, an elite snowboard group that has produced some of the best riders on the planet!
Just a 2-hour drive north of Vancouver is Whistler, British Columbia's largest mountain resort and North America number 1 resort for over ten years. Not only does this resort include a European-styled pedestrianized village with over 100 restaurants, bars and nightclubs… it also satisfies adrenaline seekers with over 8 thousand acres of skiable terrain, over 200 runs, 38 lifts, 5 snowboard parks, 2 super pipes an 11 kilometer run, over five thousand feet of vertical drop. And as host to the 2010 Winter Olympics, new venues and facilities include the Whistler Sliding Centre (Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton) and the Whistler Olympic Park (Cross-Country Skiing, Biathlon and Ski Jumping).
The Thompson Okanagan's geographical location makes it home to Champaign Snow, an extremely dry, light powder that is the result of particular temperatures and weather patterns. Consequently, its interior alpine resorts offer dream-come-true conditions for powder-fiends the world over. Only a 1-hour drive from Kelowna, Big White brags over 27 thousand acres of skiable terrain with 118 runs, 5 alpine bowls, 16 lifts, a tubing park, skating rink, cross-country trails, snowshoeing wilderness and snowmobile tracks and is also home to Canada's largest ski-in ski-out resort village. And Main Street's shops, restaurant and bars will surely not disappoint. Sun Peaks, just a 45-minute drive from Kamloops, has provided over 40 seasons of amazing snow on its 3,678 acres of skiable terrain that covers 3 mountains and includes 122 runs! Silver Star Resort in Vernon enjoys much the same conditions on its 115 runs and 100-plus kilometers of Nordic trails and night skiing.
The glacier-capped Kootenay Rockies are home to the majority of the province's snowcat, backcountry and heli-skiing. Fernie Alpine Resort is a favourite poster-child photo-op location for some of the continent's top ski and snowboard magazines, and for good reason. Canada's fastest growing resort has 2,500 skiable acres with a vertical drop of 857 meters that includes 2 high-speed quad chairs, 2 quad lifts, 2 triple lifts and 4 surface lifts. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has been hailed as the Number 1 resort for powder in North America by Skiing Magazine. Featuring the walk-on Golden Eagle Gondola (as well as 4 other lifts), this resort was once the gateway to Canada's West. Only 50 kilometers north of Kimberley, the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort at the Columbia River's headwaters includes not only 2 lifts and a terrain park but also Canada's largest hot mineral pools. Find a better way to do the après ski scene!
Other alpine facilities in British Columbia include Hemlock and Manning Park in Vancouver; Apex Mountain, Crystal Mountain, Harper Mountain, Mount Baldy and Phoenix Mountain in the Thompson Okanagan; Kimberley, Panorama Mountain, Revelstoke Mountain, Red Mountain, Salmo, Summit Lake and Whitewater in the Kootenay Rockies; Mount Timothy and Troll Mountain in the Cariboo Chilcotin; Murray Ridge, Powder King, Purden, Shames Mountain, Smithers and Tabor Mountain in Northern BC.
